British designers' new gen
A new generation of designer’s is cropping up in London. They have brought a new dynamism to London fashion and are even making their creativity even felt abroad.
Here are some of the new designers to keep an eye on:
Gilles DEACON, the eldest of the group having graduated from St. Martin’s in 1992, first started his career at CASTELBAJAC in Paris and then on to BOTTEGA VENETA in Italy. He launched hid first collection in 2004 and was promptly awarded a British Fashion Award in 2004 and nominated by ELLE magazine in 2005.
In his last collection (Winter 07/08), the designer sent his models down the runway wearing heavy gauge knit scarves that were wrapped around them creating walking sculptures with randomly placed peacock feathers. He also is a regular illustrator at magazines such as, THE FACE and DUTCH.
Christopher KANE a recent graduate of central St. Martin’s, presented his first collection in February 2006. His talent quickly drew the attention of Donatella VERSACE, with whom he now works with for ready-to-wear and accessories. His Winter 07/08 was an homage to the 80’s Mugler spirit, with giant SWAROVSKI sequins in velvet and leather.
Gareth PUGH, at only 24 years old, presented his fifth collection sponsored by TOPSHOP this Winter. He has already worked for Rick OWENS at REVILLON. He currently creates for KOPENHAGEN FURS. He has also designed for the famous London boutique, DOVER STREET MARKET and their new Tokyo shop. His work is sold at COLETTE in Paris and at BARNEYS in New York.
His Winter 07/08 collection plays between a rocker, bondage, punk look and 60’s black and white futurists looks, to create sculptural clothes.
Marios SCHWAB, has mastered the combination of sport and luxury. He does not hesitate to blend down quilting with silk mousseline or satin. For his Winter 07/08 collection, he showed quilted dresses that were highly structured with defined waists. He combines neoprene, polar fleece, felt and quilted nylon with silk mousseline, SWAROVSKI crystals and metal details.
